Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:

   Greetings in the name of our Blessed Lord Jesus! Today, we are celebrating Gaudete ("rejoice" in Latin) Sunday, and we manifest the splendor of this day with the liturgical color, rose, joyful music and incense. This is the Sunday on which we as a Church proclaim at the top of our lungs that Christ’s coming is near, and we rejoice with great ardor and fervor that Emmanuel, God-with-us, is the God of our Hearts!

   As we celebrate this Rejoice Sunday, let us venture into the historical significance of the Advent Song entitled, “O come, O come, Emmanuel" (Latin: "Veni, veni, Emmanuel"). The text was originally written in Latin, and was/is metrical paraphrase of the O Antiphons, a series of plainchant antiphons attached to the Magnificat at Vespers over the final days before Christmas.

   According to Wikipedia: The hymn has its origins over 1,200 years ago in monastic life in the 8th or 9th century. Seven days before Christmas Eve monasteries would sing the “O antiphons” in anticipation of Christmas Eve when the eighth antiphon, “O Virgo virginum” (“O Virgin of virgins”) would be sung before and after Mary's canticle, the Magnificat (Luke 1:46b–55). The Latin metrical form of the hymn was composed as early as the 12th century.    In its current form (for the most part), it is according to the 1851 translation by John Mason Neale from Hymns Ancient and Modern. For the remainder of this Advent Season, when we sing this song, let us truly beseech our Blessed Lord Jesus to come with His powerful yet gentle touch to transform our Families’ lives. By so doing, this song will have a profound influence upon our lives!

Let us prepare our hearts well with the rest of the entire Church throughout the world for the aforementioned wonderful celebrations. By so doing, our church family will enter into the fullness of what it truly means to be in the Season of Advent, our time of preparation for the coming of Jesus in the Creche, that is Manger, which means “Feeding Place”.

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo:

   ¡Saludos en el nombre de nuestro bendito Señor Jesús! Hoy celebramos el Domingo de Gaudete ("alegría" en latín), y manifestamos el esplendor de este día con el color litúrgico rosa, música alegre e incienso. Este es el domingo en el que, como Iglesia, proclamamos a viva voz que la venida de Cristo está cerca, y nos regocijamos con gran fervor y entusiasmo porque Emmanuel, Dios con nosotros, ¡es el Dios de nuestros corazones!

   Al celebrar este Domingo de Gaudete, adentrémonos en el significado histórico del himno de Adviento titulado «Oh Ven, Oh ven, Emmanuel» (en latín: «Veni, veni, Emmanuel»). El texto fue escrito originalmente en latín y es una paráfrasis métrica de las Antífonas O, una serie de antífonas de canto gregoriano que se cantan junto con el Magníficat en las Vísperas durante los últimos días antes de Navidad.

   Según Wikipedia: Este himno tiene sus orígenes hace más de 1200 años en la vida monástica de los siglos VIII o IX. Siete días antes de la Nochebuena, los monasterios cantaban las «antífonas O» en preparación para la Nochebuena, momento en el que se cantaba la octava antífona, «O Virgo virginum» («Oh Virgen de las vírgenes»), antes y después del cántico de María, el Magníficat (Lucas 1:46b-55). La forma métrica latina del himno se compuso ya en el siglo XII.

   En su forma actual (en su mayor parte), se basa en la traducción de 1851 realizada por John Mason Neale, incluida en el himnario Hymns Ancient and Modern.       Durante el resto de este Adviento, al cantar este himno, roguemos de corazón a nuestro Santísimo Señor Jesús que venga con su toque poderoso pero a la vez tierno para transformar la vida de nuestras familias. De esta manera, este himno tendrá una profunda influencia en nuestras vidas. Muchas gracias por su participación en el Rito Penitencial de Adviento con nuestros queridos sacerdotes de diferentes partes del estado. Preparemos bien nuestros corazones, junto con toda la Iglesia en el mundo, para estas maravillosas celebraciones. De esta manera, nuestra comunidad parroquial vivirá plenamente el verdadero significado del Adviento, nuestro tiempo de preparación para la venida de Jesús en el pesebre, que significa “lugar de alimentación”.

   Que Dios los bendiga abundantemente a todos y que lleve a buen término la obra que ha comenzado en nosotros.
